Coffee Card with Muted Colors

The muted colors challenge at A Blog Named Hero ended a few days ago but there will be a new one soon. I had one more muted card on kraft cardstock to share, though. I’ve also included some step by step photos for those who have requested them. This kit is sold out but I’ve included a link to other options below.

Since this is a one layer card I began by laying out all my stamps the way I liked them.

I stamped the first cup image with fade out ink then stamped and cut out a mask from a full sticky post it note. I also placed the mug and whip cream where I wanted them.

I stamped the whipped cream on the card panel and made a mask for it.

I next stamped the mug and removed all the masks.

I colored both mugs the same way. I began with the lightest marker to outline the image and add shading from both sides to make the mug appear round. I also added some light marker behind the pink mug’s handle where there would be a shadow.

I added the darkest color just to the sides.

I added the darker mid tone marker bringing this out a little further towards the center.

I brought the lighter mid tone marker almost all the way in but left a small line I colored.

I used the lightest color in the middle to add a nice highlight. I went over some areas a second time to get a better blend but as the ink dried the coloring blended better

I used my t-square ruler and my lightest brown marker to create the back of the table and to ground the mugs.

I colored the entire lower half with the lightest marker.

I added darker brown markers as shadows under the mugs. I’m not very good at where the shadows belong but I do know that most images look better with some sort of shadow instead of no shadow.

I eventually made the back of the table darker and added light shadows behind the mugs. I usually use three gray markers and the blender if the edges of the shadow are too strong.

I next stamped all three greetings in a dark brown ink. This was a bit of a mistake since the greeting on the left stamped into the darkest brown on the table. I tried to stamp directly over the original stamping with embossing ink but since I had already removed the stamps the didn’t all line up well. I restamped the upper two greetings on a scrap of the same cardstock and cut them as close to the words as I could. I don’t think the recipient of this card will have a problem with it and I think it looks fine as well.

I had colored the whipped cream and steam with warm gray markers but they were too dull so I added white colored pencil to them and it made all the difference. I also added white gel pen highlights and shimmer pen throughout the card.
