Using Pantone’s Color(s) of the Year for a Love Card

Hello! Gray and yellow are not colors I often use together, if ever. But when you don’t make a plan for what colors to use for the car or what to do with the background, sometimes you just have to wing it! This card using the Expressions of Love Collection from Spellbinders makes it look so natural.

1. Die cut all the pieces for the car from the Sunday Drive Etched Die Set and the people from the Sunday Sunset Drive Etched Die Sets.

Don’t know what colors to use? The mirrors and bumpers always look good in silver mirror cardstock. The taillights should be red. Take the rest of the colors from your own life. The people are my husband and me. The colors are his truck colors. Use shiny papers if you’ve got them!

2. Adhere pieces with liquid glue and foam tape. I love Bearly Arts Precision Glue and Scotch 3M Foam Tape.

3. Stamp the sun and rays from the Trip Around the Sun stamp set on top 3/4ths of A2 card base. I used the Rise and Shine Ink Cubes from Pinkfresh Studios.

4. Ink blend the same yellows over the sun to tone things down with the darkest at center.

5. Ink blend the rest of the card with Urban Raincoat Ink Cubes from Pinkfresh Studios, the darkest at the bottom.

When I realized I’d chosen gray for the car, this was when I had to figure out what to do with the background. Yellow was an easy choice for the top and I didn’t want to add another color for the bottom.

6. Die cut the words from the Expressions of Love Sentiments Etched Die Set from yellow shimmer cardstock three times and the same paper used for the car once. Glue the first three together then add the other offset. I didn’t want the sentiment to contrast with the yellow but I needed something to make it stand out. The offset layer helps achieve this.

7. Use foam tape to add car to the bottom. The trunk area has two layers while the rest is just one.

8. Add the die cut words to top.

9. Add white hearts with liquid glue.

I didn’t start this card intending to use the Pantone colors but it really worked out well! What do you think of the two colors for this year? How will you use them?
