How to Make a Handmade Card Feel Just Right

Hello! The highlight of every month is when the My Monthly Hero kit from Hero Arts arrives in my mailbox. I love their kits. I try to make at least ten cards a month. Sometimes cards are clean and simple and I can make many but other times, like today, my card is more involved. This card’s finishing touches really made it feel just right.

Some links below are affiliate links. At no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

  1. Cut a panel of Mustard cardstock to 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”.

2. Stamp the images from the January 2021 My Monthly Hero Kit with Intens-ified Black Ink. I stamped three of all the single images.

3. Color the images with Copic Markers. I used these markers:

Branch: E44, E47, E49

Flowers: Y11, Y15, Y17

Bee: Y15, Y17, YR27

Leaves: YG67, YG17, YG03

Wings: BG000

4. Die cut the images and arrange on the card panel. This helps to figure out the placement of the honeycomb stamp.

5. Stamp the honeycomb image with an acrylic block using Pumpkin Pie Mid- Tone Shadow Ink.

Soft Stamped Backgrounds Add Interest

6. Using Altenew Antique Gold Pigment Ink, stamp the solid honeycomb in various outlines around the card.

7. Blend on Pumpkin Pie Mid- Tone Shadow Ink at the corners and edges.

8. Die cut one hexagon from the Hexagon Infinity Die set from white cardstock. Die cut a size larger from the gold paper included in the kit.

Matting an Element Helps it Stand Out

9. Stamp the sentiment in Altenew Enchanted Gold Pigment Ink on the white hexagon. Adhere this one to the gold one.

10. Add foam tape to all the pieces and begin a adhering them to the card. The bee needed one layer of foam tape for over the sentiment and two layers over the card panel.

Embellishments Add More Visual Interest

11. Adhere random sequins throughout the card panel. These sequins are from the February 2019 My Monthly Hero Kit. That’s another favorite of mine!

White Gel Pen And Shimmer Pen Add Subtle Detail

12. Add white gel pen to the flower centers.

13. Add shimmer pen to the flowers and wings on the bee.

14. Adhere to an A2 card base.

15. The large branch does not have the spaces between the leaves and flowers cut out so I used a YR23 Copic Marker to fill it in.

What finishing touches do you like to add to a card? When I originally placed the images on the plain cardstock I thought it was nice but it was rather plain. I figured, if I didn’t like the background I could always flip the panel over!

Thanks for visiting!
